Mostar - City still divided

Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina 2007

mostar2.jpg

My brother is in Bosnia and Herzegovina currently doing research for his dissertation. He lives in our native city of Mostar. There is no war or fighting since 1995 and city fell into what I call “post war coma”. Meaning, nobody cares about anything. Everyone minds its own business. No one rushes to do anything. If you are tourist or a stranger, you would not notice any national tensions. Or would you? Story below is a testament that city is still psychologically divided between Muslims and Catholics and my brother experienced it first hand.
Last week he got caught up in the middle of hooligan fight between soccer fans, and this is a short story of his experience in his own words.

Stop Blaming the Iraqis

Posted in Politics on April 6th, 2007 by Fyodor

The U.S. invasion in Iraq will certainly be remembered as one of the greatest catastrophes in the history of the twentieth century. Most tragically, it has resulted in needless loss of human life, destruction of an entire society, and it has exposed the purely imperialistic aims of the neo-conservatives. The ordeal that the Iraqis and our soldiers have had to go through has shown the futility of the whole intervention.
It is time for the Democrats to face up to reality: admit that there is no graceful exit, and pull our troops out immediately. Our departure from Iraq—which should happen tomorrow—will necessarily be paved by more lives needlessly lost in what has become a bloody civil war. But it is also time for the Democrats to do what Bush and the Republicans never will: admit that this was our fault. It is time to stop pointing our big stick towards the Iraqis themselves, threatening pull out if “they don’t sort things out between themselves.” It is us who destroyed their government, demolishing the very texture of their society. We need to pull out because this is a colonial project and with every day of our continuing presence, Iraqis, along with us, are plunged even further into a seemingly never-ending cycle. But we cannot blame the Iraqis for the consequences. This is not only disingenuous, but reprehensibly immoral.

Democrats Win House and Senate

Does this make you cranky? Or give you hope?

Obviously its already starting to make changes with Rummy stepping down, which is something that made me happy :)

What other changes might happen? More healthcare? More taxes? More respect for the constitution? Pulling out of Iraq?

Sex. Republicans thorn in the finger.

Posted in Politics on August 29th, 2006 by moody

statue_of_liberty_face_smallx.jpg Let me start this article by addressing the issue of sex; the most evil act a human being can perform, or this is what the right wingers would have you believe if they had their way. Fortunately they don’t, or not completely at least.
US really need to get grow up as far as the sex and porn goes. When I say US I mean all of you who think about sex as a taboo or some sort of tribal ritual which will turn your kids into sex crazed lunatics. In short, conservatives. This is the only country where sex is treated as something evil or not good, and yet it is the country with the highest rate of rapes and divorces. So this kind of conservative views about sex, family and porn is obviously not working. Read the rest of this entry »

Real news are myth

Posted in News and Media, Politics on August 3rd, 2006 by moody

world I just wanted to post my thoughts about news and media role in todays events.
Let me tell you one thing.
I am originally from Balkans (living in US now) and I lived through the horror of war and I know what media can do to the nation.
I can see how most Americans are pro-Israel. It is hard not to be when every news channel is pro-Israel. No exceptions. It is almost like brain washing. It is the same in Middle East with Arab stations.
The only real news are the ones you get first hand on the battle ground, and most of us will never have privilege to do that, so i suggest doing what I do. Read the rest of this entry »

Bigotry

Posted in Politics on June 5th, 2006 by Fyodor

Today’s manic rush to declare a constitutional ban on gay marriage is another example of this administration’s willingness to use bigotry to boost its falling numbers. This is the president who plunged this coutnry into a war in Iraq, caused the most massive deficit in the history, had the least number of jobs created since Herbert Hoover, and has the lowest rating than almost any other president during the second term. Immigration Madness

Posted in Politics on June 2nd, 2006 by moody

crankyface.jpgIt took me 6 years of agonizing research to finally find one thing that I agree with Bush. Immigration reform.

Here is my view (not much different from Bush’s):

  1. Don’t let anyone in US illegally
  2. All 11 million illegal immigrants have to go back to their country of origin and re-apply for entrance in US through legal channels (tourist visa, work visa or green card)
  3. Border patrol needs to be tough and thorough (I don’t think we need “wall of China” but come on! Today’s security is a joke)

George is my Hero

Heres another great quote from our most respected dictator…

This deffinately ranks up there with “Axis of Evil”

Bush’s Comments on Flight 93

“I believe that it was the first counter-attack to World War III

Iraq had WMD’s dammit!

Posted in Politics on April 25th, 2006 by scorch

I get tired of the “We were lied to” mentality of some in this country.

Listen, Iraq had WMD’s, we know this for a fact, we sold them to them. And last night I watched the Daily Show, and they had one of Saddam’s General’s on. He wrote a book called Saddam’s Secrets. And he says he knows for a fact that Saddam had WMD’s and that they were moved to Syria prior to the American Invasion. He saw the WMD’s with his own eyes and he was commander of the pilots who moved them, and the pilots told him what they were moving (WMD’s).
He also went on to say that Iraq is a Free country now, and was glad that the American’s liberated Iraq.

Things aren’t perfect over there, but they are on a path to get better. Bush is no where near as evil as he is made out to be. I am not saying I am supporter, but he gets blamed for a lot of things that aren’t his fault, and even

Big Government is not the solution

Posted in Politics on April 25th, 2006 by scorch

I am growing more and more tired of people proposing to solve all of society’s problems, via Big Government.

Listen, Big Government often hurts those its seeks to help, while wasting our tax dollars.

The answer to our Health Care issues is not more government. Its less government. Government causes health costs to increase 70-90% with no real benefit.
